Short answer: ChatGPT now shows ads to logged-in adults on the Free and Go plans, and you can reduce or remove them. You can turn off personalization in Settings, or pay with fewer messages or an upgrade to be ad-free. OpenAI says advertisers see only totals such as views and clicks, not your chats. Press reports describe a wide and growing footprint.

The ads started as a US test on Feb. 9, 2026 and have spread since. Below, we separate what OpenAI says from what outlets report, then walk through the steps.

What's Actually Real Here

What OpenAI says (from its help page, opened Oct. 27). Ads may appear for Free and Go users. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not see ads, and neither do accounts identified as under 18. Temporary Chats show no ads. Ads are "not eligible to appear near sensitive topics," which OpenAI lists as personal health, mental health or politics.

What data the ads use, per OpenAI. Without personalization, ads use your current chat thread plus basics such as general location or language. With personalization on, they can also use how you interact with ads and your past chats and memory. Advertisers get only aggregated data like views and clicks, and OpenAI says they never receive your chats, memories, name, email, precise location or IP address.

What the press adds on scale. The Next Web reported on Oct. 21 that ChatGPT ads now run in 89 countries, after OpenAI added 26, and that more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns. OpenAI itself said "over 40 countries" on Aug. 31, so the later figure comes from press coverage of the Oct. 21 announcement, not a page we could open. The Next Web also reported that OpenAI began testing "Sponsored Agents" with some US advertisers.

Amazon is a US pilot. The Next Web reported on Sept. 11 that Amazon Ads announced a pilot on Sept. 10 that lets select US advertisers buy ChatGPT placements through Amazon's ad platform. Ads appear as text or images below answers, labeled as sponsored.

Visual ads are a test. BetaNews reported that OpenAI announced on Oct. 5 a US-only test of ads that appear during image generation, with an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI says they will be clearly labeled and kept separate from the image being created.

OpenAI's own claims. On Aug. 31 OpenAI said ChatGPT Ads reached $1 billion in annualized revenue run rate in under 200 days, and that "Ads in ChatGPT are always clearly labeled and separate from ChatGPT's answers" and do not influence answers. Those are company statements; we found no independent check of either.

Where the Hype Outruns the Reality

It is not a ChatGPT takeover. If you pay for Plus or higher, you do not see ads under OpenAI's rules. Ads are not mixed into answers, according to OpenAI.

But the data question is real. The rules have shifted over time. Help Net Security reported on Aug. 31 that ads did not use past chats and memory, "at least not yet." OpenAI's help page now says personalization can use them, if you leave it on. Check your setting rather than assume.

"Aggregate only" is OpenAI's description. We could not verify how this works internally. Advertisers receiving only totals does not tell you what OpenAI's own systems use for targeting.

Turning personalization off does not turn ads off. OpenAI says you will still see ads based on your current chat. If you often share personal details in chatbots, see our look at AI Companion Apps for the wider privacy picture.

How to Limit or Turn Off ChatGPT Ads

OpenAI's help page gives these steps. Menu names can change, so check yours.

  1. Open Settings, then "Ads controls." On web or iOS you can also go to chatgpt.com/#settings/Advertising.
  2. Make ads less personal: turn off the "Personalize ads" toggle. Ads can then use only your current chat thread. Use the "Past chats and memory" toggle to control that input.
  3. Clear what OpenAI stored for ads: select "Delete ads data." It clears your ads history and topics, not your chats, and full removal can take up to 30 days.
  4. Review or flag ads: under "View History and Topics" you can see ads you viewed or interacted with. Use the more options menu (three dots) on an ad for "Hide ad," "Report ad" and "About this ad."
  5. Go ad-free on Free: Settings, "Ads controls," "Change plan to go ad-free," then "Reduce message limits" and confirm. The tradeoff is lower message limits and reduced tool access such as image generation. Go users must switch to Free first.
  6. Or upgrade to Plus or Pro, which OpenAI says show no ads.
  7. For a one-off chat, use a Temporary Chat.
